A mill was built here around 1800 by Nicholas Culpeper and became one of the largest water mills in eastern North America when it operated until 1872. In 1802, John Marshall settled here with his family and started a small grocery store which became one of the most important businesses in town for many years before moving to its current location on Main Street in 1904. By 1906 there were over 100 stores operating within five blocks of downtown! During World War II preparations were made for D-Day landings at Normandy; however, only a few buildings survive from this era including Main Street's Confederate Memorial Hall – once used as an armory where munitions could be stored prior to landing – while other buildings such as Hotel Adelphi still stand today providing evidence of life during that time period within Winchesters borders! Today, much like then, Winchesters economy depends largely upon its numerous shops, restaurants and bars which are all clustered along busy streets within walking distance or just minutes' drive away!

Winchester was founded in 1736 by James Winchester, who named it for his brother Samuel Winchester. The community grew quickly, and by 1740 there were over 100 people living there. In 1768, the town was chartered as a borough and became the capital of Virginia. In 1871, Winchester merged with Fairfax to form the new county of Fairfax.
