The name Arlington derives from the surveyor's name of Colonel John Fairfax, who surveyed and purchased the land for what became Arlington Heights. Arlington is one of twelve towns in King County. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Arlington were Scottish immigrants who arrived around 1792 and named their new settlement after Prince George of Wales (later George II), the son of King George III. They built a log cabin on a bend in the Yakima River and started to cultivate agriculture. By 1851, they had moved to a more spacious clearing with dirt roads where they built houses that remain today. In 1853, they sold most of their holdings to Peter Godeaux and James Robertson for $1 million dollars which formed the nucleus around which later developed Arlington Heights and other nearby communities. In 1907, as part of an effort to improve transportation links between Seattle and Lynnwood, Washington City Council voted to create a road through downtown Lynnwood called "Avenue U" which then ran south on Armour Road past Garfield High School before terminating at " approaches" or "Arlington Heights". This provided an easy access into downtown Lynnwood from across Lake Washington without having to go through Seattle proper. The routing was changed in 1911 when Avenue U became I-5 outside of town limits after heavy growth withinLynnwood paralleled I-5 corridor eastward from Everett until it met Southcenter Drive/Upper Queen Anne Rd northeast of Northlake Mall near Safeco Field
