After World War II ended and native military service ended throughout most of America,[2] many war veterans settled in Auburn[3][4] among them Harry "Bud" Anderson (a 1934 graduate of Arizona State University who later served three terms as Mayor)[5] who had been stationed at Fort Lewis near Tacoma; he managed to get money from various business interests to reopen his hotel there which soon became known as "The BudAnderson Resort". In 1955, local farmers petitioned the state government to allow them to sell eggs without laying them; this led to passage of Washington State law that allowed egg production beginning with 1951.[6] For many years after this event development around town slowly slowed due primarily to lack of housing but recent construction including an arena/mall has brought life back into downtown areas along with new businesses opening up within walking distance or just down the street
