Battle Ground is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 6,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Battle Ground were fur traders from the Russian Empire in 1807. In 1812, Major James Kapp and his detachment of U.S. Marines fought a brief battle against Native Americans near what is now Battle Ground as part of an effort to expand American influence in Northwest Territories. In 1814, during the Mexican-American War, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna destroyed Fort Vancouver on Puget Sound and captured much of what is now Battle Ground after a three-day siege that started on July 26th. The people of Battle Ground were forced by Mexican forces into concentration camps near present day Tacoma until they were liberated by American forces on October 15th following a two-week campaign led by Captain John Cushing with artillery support from Marine Corps troops under Lieutenant Colonel George Crozier.. The town was founded originally as Frenchtown on March 21st, 1861 by settlers who had come overland from Dawson City and/or Fort Snelling in Minnesota Territory as part of the Oregon Treaty which ended the Civil War between the United States and Mexico. The name was changed to honor Confederate General Robert Ewing's victory at Antietam Creek on September 17th, 1862 while propertyowner Israel Putnam contributed $2 per acre (equivalent to ) towards building fortifications around it which served as military barracks for civilian soldiers called "Horse Guards." On April Fool's Day 1865 Union General Gideon Welles ordered all military installations within 3 miles (5 km) of Seattle be burned down including Fort Snelling so that no evidence could be left behind of another potential Confederate attack against that city.. This event helped convince many residents in downtownSeattle to join Mayor Edwin Denny in supporting secession from the United States effective November 16th when Lincoln signed an Executive Order calling for all states except California to secede from the Union.. On December 12th 1860 Battle Ground became one of five townships within King County created through legislation passed by Congress following Grant's inauguration as President.. On May 14th 1862 Alvarado donated 640 acres (262 ha) southeast corner parcel located east side Of Main Street & south side Of Hwy 99 along With lots adjoining parcels donated w/in 10 days prior; this land would become known as Alvarado Park today! On January 9TH 1863 A bill proposing creation of eight additional counties withinKing County failed when only 7 Representatives voted against it; these included Representatives George Atwater (Davenport), David Stephenson (Fremont), Lorenzo Thomas ( Mukilteo), Levi Strauss (Bellevue), Winfield Scott Douglas (Bremerton) & Henry Wilson(Issaquah). resulteding in 1ST ever state Constitutional Convention held insideof KING COUNTY!…The resulting Constitution provided for 4 Congressional Districts insteadof just 2 currently!!….Election results showed Abraham Lincoln winning 60%+ votecast wonoverJohn Quincy Adams 40%. Battles ground remained loyaltoUlysses S Grant throughoutthe entire war…. After Lincoln’s assassination Grant appointed Ulysses S Schuyler Butler Attorney General & moved Camp To Olympia…. Battle Ground is a census-designated place in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 4,032 at the 2010 census. Battle Ground is located on the east bank of the Columbia River and is part of the Bellevue–Renton Combined Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Battle Ground were Native American tribal members who had been living there for centuries before European settlers arrived. In 1851, Battle Ground was founded as a village by Robert E. Lee and his family during the Pacific Northwest Gold Rush. The town was named after General George Washington's battlefield where he lost an engagement with British troops in 1775. At its peak, Battle ground had a population of 1,600 people and boasted three banks, six stores, two churches, four schools, and several businesses including a hotel and restaurant. It was also home to one of the first baseball diamonds in Washington state when it was built in 1881 near what is now Pioneer Square. In 1907 Battle Ground became part of King County when it was created from portions of Seattle and Bellevue. The boundary between King County and Seattle changed several times over the years but always included parts of Bellevue which lay on or near White Lake until annexation by Seattle in 1911 severed that relationship completely. During World War II many Japanese Americans were interned at Benicia Army Depot before being shipped to various locations across America as war prisoners under various aliases including "George" Nakamura (Auntie J), "Kuichi" Miyazaki (Drunken Boy #2), "Toshiro" Umezu (Chauffeur). On December 7th 1942 USArmy Private First Class Yoshihide Shimomura died from exposure while working as a loader on an ammunition truck at Benicia Army Depot during World War II; Shimomura had been born in Kobe Japan on November 6th 1941 approximately one year earlier On February 8th 1949 anti-aircraft artillery rounds exploded off shore causing damage to buildings within 10 miles of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard; this caused $1 million dollars worth in insured losses with resulting asbestos exposures Claims were made against both Boeing & Kaiser Aluminum Company & local shipyards along with other companies within ten miles radius
