This project also added new transportation options: an underground light rail line running through downtown linking Union Station with nearby stadiums; and completion of a streetcar system that opened in 2003 between Pioneer Courthouse Square and South Waterfront District/South Hillside neighborhoods making it easier to get around town if you're not driving or using public transportation. Bellingham, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat of King County. The population was 103,534 at the 2010 census. It is located on Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Bellevue and about 30 miles (50 km) south-southwest of Tacoma. The first European settler in what is now Bellingham was James Forbes in 1821 when he came via ship from Vancouver Island. He named his land "Fremont" after General George Fraser, who had commanded British forces at the Battle of Waterloo two years earlier. The first permanent English settlers were Amos Eaton and Hiram Bingham in 1829; they erected a log cabin called Elmira on Elliott Bay near present-day Mercer Island for their family before moving to Everett in 1835. In 1840, Robert Anderson bought land northeast of present-day Bellingham from Hiram Bingham and started building a house which he named Maple Hill after his home townmaple tree in England where he had been born in 1785. In 1851, John Wesley Arbuckle founded the First Methodist Episcopal Church here; it still meets here today though services are offered more often at Olympia's First United Methodist Church across Tacoma Street from the original church site).Arbuckle also opened up Fremont Lakes as an agricultural destination for pioneers seeking fresh water supplies for their growing farms while they awaited railroads to connect them with other parts of America. In 1865, Arbuckle purchased additional property southeast of Bellingham and began developing it into what is now Pioneer Square—named for him by Governor Isaac Stevens because Oregon Territory boundary lines had not yet been settled then.— until 1898 when it became part of Seattle.— By 1900, there were 6 settlements totaling over 100 people scattered throughout central Puget Sound: Ballard/Bellevue/Everett/Fremont Heights/Maple Hill/Pioneer Square—all except Ballard being built within 10 years or less.— All but Everett developed single-family homes rather than rented out asagoons did elsewhere during that period.— By 1907 all these places were consolidated under one municipal government with headquarters located at Present day Pioneer Square.— This consolidation led to rapid growth rates due largely to vocations related233to education: many students coming directly from England or Scotland applied to become teachers.; Many businessmen followed suit and opened stores or added services such as transportation along with real estate development.: After World War I ended things changed again with increased demand for lumber brought on by automobiles.: Growth continued through World War II until 1949 when annexation by King County led to full cityhood.: Today Bellingham enjoys high quality job opportunities thanks to its status as an international hub due both to its proximity to major metropolitan areas as well as its access to exporters.,
