In 1847, Captain George Simpson purchased land east of downtown Seattle from Juan de Fuca Indian Nation for $6,000 dollars cash plus four cows and four horses (the first European settler to purchase land east of Seattle). From this purchase, Simpson began developing what is now Pioneer Square located near Volunteer Park in central Seattle into one of Bellingham’s most significant neighborhoods today! In 1850, Captain Simpson bought additional lands to create what is now Pioneer Square East which included his largest parcel including much of CentralSeattle today! He named his new neighborhood after himself – “Pioneer Square”! The first commercially produced revolver made in Washington state was created by Daniel Boorstin in 1851 when he patented his design for the .38 Special revolver called the “Bellingham Rifle Gun” or simply “The Gun”.
