Burien is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. Burien was founded in 1883 by John W. Denny and named for British Columbia's then-governor, Sir John A. Macdonald. It became an incorporated town in 1907. The first post office opened in Burien on November 5, 1883, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 15 of that year. The first settler in the town was James Fenton who built a cabin on what is now Main Street. Burien grew rapidly due to its location along Puget Sound and its easy access to transportation such as ferries and railways. In 1916 the city of Seattle annexed Burien while King County continued to operate the municipal government with a small staff but full powers over public education, building maintenance, parks and zoning laws; burien had no mayor or councilors of its own except for one term as chairman of the county board of commissioners which lasted from 1914 to 1923). In 1938 Burien annexed nearby Renton which had been part of Seattle since 1907 but without any vote by the local community; this annexation was ratified by Seattle City Council minutes later that year as part of eminent domain proceedings in order to build new shopping malls across Lake Union from Renton
