Cheney, George H. (George HW), was born on January 29, 1947 in Wyndham County, Oklahoma. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a B.A. in economics in 1970 and an M.A. in political science in 1974. After graduating from college, Cheney worked as a research analyst for the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation until 1977 when he became an assistant to then-House Majority Leader Gerald Ford (R-Michigan). From 1981 to 1988 Cheney served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Policy and Planning before becoming Director of Central Intelligence from 1988 to 1993 where he led the CIA’s operations against proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and other terrorism threats abroad. In March 2001, Cheney was appointed Governor of Wyoming after serving as its U.S Ambassador to Russia from 1998-2001 and is currently serving as Vice President Dick Cheney’s alma mater at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution – once again focused on international affairs with a special focus on Iraq/Iran relations and Afghanistan policymaking
