The first permanent settlers in what is now Des Moines, Washington were the Whitman family. The Whitman family moved to the area in 1851 and started a small farm. In 1857, they built the first house in the area and named it after their father, General John A. Whitman. The Whitmans kept their farm for many years until it was sold in 1911 to Wm. Hennessey and his son-in-law, Harry J. Bidwell. The Bidwells ran the farm until 1978 when it was purchased by Lester Pyle Jr., who made it his home from 1951 to 1979.
