Des Moines, Washington is a small town located in Spokane County, Washington. The population was 1,584 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Spokane-Cowlitz Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1887 by George Cramer and named after Des Moines, Iowa. It was incorporated as a city in 1907 and it became an independent township in 1911. The population increased to 2,000 by 1920 and 4,500 by 1930. Growth slowed from World War II until the mid-1980s when a series of economic setbacks caused the population to decrease again to 1,580 by 1990. In 2000, Des Moines reestablished itself as an unincorporated community with a population of just over 1 hundred residents. The downtown area has been renovated several times since its incorporation and it now contains two restaurants and one convenience store. A new library opened in 2001 on Pershing Road east of the central square which replaced what had been an old post office building dating back to 1881 that had been used for agricultural purposes before becoming a library later on.

When they reached the Indian Territory, they decided to stay and start a new town called Cedar Rapids. The first post office was established in Des Moines in 1865. For many years Des Moines was one of the largest cities in Iowa because it had a population greater than any other city except for Cedar Rapids. In 1895, however, Cedar Rapids became the capital of Iowa due to its larger population size
