Des Moines is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 54,235 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The city and county were founded in 1847 as part of the west wing of Des Moines Township. The first permanent settler in what is now Des Moines was Ebenezer Emmons who arrived on November 29, 1847. He built a cabin on the east side of present-day First Street and called his town "Emmonsville." In 1850, James Auld established a ferry service from Indian Island to Cedar Rapids over the Muskegon River. This allowed for easy transportation between Cedar Rapids and Minneapolis/St Paul with goods that could not be brought by land or wagon train. Alden Smith purchased Emmons's cabin and started trading with Native Americans for goods he could not bring himself to purchase from other settlers. On December 11, 1850, Alden Smith married Rachel Linneman at Stonington Church near where First Street meets Iowa State Highway 10 today. They named their new home Clear Brook Farm after Rachel's family farm back East in Massachusetts which they had visited while living there during their honeymoon (the trip took place beforerailroads came into play). In 1854 James Auld donated 1 acre (0.40 km²) of land along Third Street south of Cedar Rapids to serve as an agricultural fairgrounds site for both Des Moines and Cedar Rapids; this became known as "Auld Triangle". On July 6th of that year (1854), Des Moines incorporated as a town under the name Clear Brook Farm Township with 121 residents including Alden Smith who served as its first mayor; it remains one of the most notable moments in local history because it marked an end to open enrollment for voting purposes which began two years later on October 15th - thus consolidating all Voter Registration drives taking place within three different towns into one large area! On January 8th 1855 William Blythe organized what would becomethe first bowling alley in America - located on Fourth Street just north of present-day Molineux Road - called Blythe AlleyBowling Grounds & Saloon; this alley contributed significantly to early social and economic development within Des Moines! In 1860 Hiawatha left his dance recital performance at Ames Auditorium following a long wait due to lacklandvd space; subsequent performances were held outdoors until 1865 when indoor seating was added! Growth continued unabated throughout much of the late 1800s until railroads made their appearance – bringing about increased traffic demand along with new opportunities for entrepreneurs like Alden Smith who turned Clear Brook Farms into one of America's largest cotton plantations! By 1900 more than 50%of DesMoines' workforce consisted either farmers or laborers working off farms across central Iowa!"
