In 1949, East Wenatchee incorporated as a town and changed its name to Wenatchee County. In 1984, it became an independent state and reverted back to its original name of East Wenatchee County

Over recent years there has been renewed interest within the community towards preserving its history and architecture which has created a resurgence of interest in traditional cultures from around the world including Chinook Jargon speakers from Asia who live along Interstate 5 near Milepost 137 east of town; Eastern Shoshone people who use their canyonlands as hunting grounds; and Pomo Indians who live along Highway 101 south of town. Today, East Wenatchee is an important cultural resource for communities throughout Western Washington and offers unique experiences that are not typically found elsewhere in this region
The town of Wenatchee was founded in 1853 by George Armstrong Custer and his Indian scouts, and named for the Columbia River. The population grew rapidly after gold was found in the area, and in 1865 Wenatchee became the first town in Washington to be chartered as a city. The main industries were lumbering and agriculture until the early 20th century when Wenatchee experienced a rapid growth in its service sector, which led to its nickname "The City of Service." In 1931, Wenatchee seceded from Washington State and formed the independent state of Yakima.
