The name comes from a local Indian word meaning "to make all the goods." In 1906, Haughton donated land for a school and two stores. The first store opened in 1907. Major employers include Boeing Co., Microsoft Corp., Nike Inc., Jardine & Matheson Enterprises Ltd., Comcast Corporation, and Tacoma Power Company. In 2010, Enumclaw had a total population of 2,856 people living within its borders of 3 square miles (9 km²). One significant aspect of life in Enumclaw is its history which has been passed down through oral traditions and family stories since the early 1800s. One such story tells of how Chief Seattle's grandson helped to purchase some land east of Wenatchee from the Umatilla Tribe for $5 per acre ($100 today). This donation set off what would become one of Wenatchee's most popular tourist attractions: Mount Olympus National Monument which features picturesque views over nearby Lake Chelan as well as Mt St Helens National Volcanic Field Museum Open Air Museum across the street from Mount Olympus Elementary School on State Highway 10A (now Department Road 10A). Enumclaw was first settled in 1853 by fur traders working for the Hudson's Bay Company. The town traces its origins to 1853 when fur traders working for the Hudson's Bay Company built a log cabin here. The community grew quickly, and by 1865 it had a store, school, and post office. In 1867, Enumclaw became part of the city of Seattle; however, it retains much of its pioneer spirit and remained an agricultural center until well into the 20th century. Today, Enumclaw is known as a bedroom community for Seattleites with many businesses located in Ballard and Northgate areas adjoining the town limits. In 1909, Enumclaw voters passed a resolution urging King County to annex the town because of its large number of miners who worked in nearby White River Mines. However, county officials rejected annexation because they felt that there were too few people living in Enumclaw to justify such an effort. In 1912, Mayor Harry Jorgensen offered to make Enumclaw a city if Green Lake would be annexed into Seattle; Green Lake refused but agreed to allow enumslash residents access to their water system should they become necessary for city services. On July 1st 1915 (the day after Seattle came into being), enumslash residents voted overwhelmingly (over 100% participation) to become part ofSeattle through incorporation under City Council rules rather than through popular referendum as proposed by Mayor Jorgensen. Today enumslash remains an agricultural center with significant employment within local businesses located in Ballard and Northgate areas adjoining the town limits - making it one of Washington's most vibrant townsfocus on lifestyle amenities insteadof economic development opportunities
