Everett, Washington is a town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. Everett is one of the oldest settlements in Puget Sound and first known by its present name of Poulsbo in 1846. The town's growth began with the arrival of gold miners in 1859 and continued with residential development after colonization by European Americans in 1865. In 1902, Everett became a city when it was annexed by Tacoma. Population growth resumed following annexation until 2000, when it reached its current 7,812 count. The Town of Everett was organized on November 2nd, 1846 from portions of what are now adjacent Thurston and King counties as part of an attempt to establish land claims against those who had already claimed much territory within what are now Pierce and King counties from Native American populations. The first post office opened in Poulsbo on February 14th, 1847., serving residents along the Duwamish River valley westward to Olympia and eastward to Des Moines Bayou; this operation was discontinued due to lack of customers when gold seekers discovered new sources for silver near Mount Rainier on March 17th 1840 The townsite chosen for Everett consisted largely of high lying mountainous country bordered by deep valleys running north-south which would be ideal for irrigation lands needed for growing cotton crops Construction began on a small courthouse/ Jail next door to the local schoolhouse on May 3rd 1850 after voters passed a $5 per month tax rate to finance construction A town hall (later replaced by the current civic center) was completed at 1215 First Avenue NE on October 1st 1850 which served as both municipality’s courthouse and jail until 1861 when they were moved into adjoining buildings at 1221 First Avenue NE On October 9th 1860 Voters passed an ordinance establishing a Board Of Health which would manage public health services including education about hygiene requirements for living among miners On November 15th 1860 voters passed an ordinance setting up City Hall at 1221 First Avenue NE By 1870 there were over 100 residents living in Everett With rapid population growth throughout Puget Sound during that decade there were also corresponding increases in jobs available so early industry development took hold including sawmills (1871), blacksmith shops (1872), grist mills (1873), carriage works (1875) & cheese factories (1876). This led not only to increased economic activity but also social moresRapidement through 20 century seen generally positive changes such as: prohibition 1920-1929; becoming racially integrated 1954; increasing access to education opportunities 1972-2000.; establishmentof community service programs1980-.present
