During World War II, Everett was one of several areas surrounding Seattle that were bombed by the Japanese military. For many years no one living in Everett knew about this history until someone pointed it out to them when they visited the town during their travels in the 1920s In 1907, Japanese Americans living in Seattle began moving to Tacoma because of anti-Japanese sentiment inflamed by World War II hysteria. Many jobs available elsewhere were denied Japanese Americans so they chose to move rather than risk being drafted into the military or facing discrimination themselves. However, once word got out that some people were moving there for economic reasons only a few hundred people applied for positions at first because most of those who did not want to leave behind their homes and families went without job offers The decision by local leaders made prior to Pearl Harbor never been changed: If Japan attacked America then everyone would go into hiding except for very few who could afford it As things turned out “the doors hit” pretty hard for these people as soon as Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 American citizens realized just how much easier it was going to be for them if they just stayed put Most of these Japanese American employees who had left Tacoma returned home within two weeks after Pearl Harbor ended but approximately 1/3rd (or possibly even more) of all those employed before then suddenly lost everything including their homes and businesses when orders came down from above not to return any more workers . This event known locally as "The Great Migration" helped spur development around here today with businesses rapidly opening up looking for workers Additionally most of these jobs were created right near where we now shop at Safeway which opened its first store in 1948 right next door to what is now Pioneer Square
