A new airfield called "Nampa Field" northeast of town began operations on July 17, 1928 with a runways measuring 3/10ths mile (1/4 kilometer) wide and 800 feet (240 meters) long; it served as a training ground for Yakima Air Force Base until 1963 when it became an airport under control of Boeing Co.. In 1941 Lacey had a total population of 807 residents; during World War II it had reached 1,500 residents due to military personnel stationed here for various reasons including working on Boeing production lines or being trained at Nampa Field Airport. Postwar manufacturing declined in importance and by 1950 only 36 people lived in Lacey; this decreased to 22 persons by 1970 when the last active military base closed down here amid budget cuts that affected many communities throughout Washington state following World War II Lacey has seen many changes over its history: from small community struggling during Prohibition days through current day success as an agricultural center with high growth rates since becoming an incorporated municipality
