The first Europeans to see Lake Stevens were Juan de Fuca and his crew on their Discovery Expedition in 1592. They named it Selkirk after their ship. The first person to live on the lake was David Thompson in 1811 when he explored Canada westward from Vancouver Island. He built a log cabin at the mouth of Selkirk Creek just east of present-day Georgetown. The first people who lived permanently on the lake were white Americans who arrived during the gold rush years in 1855 and 1856. They called it Selkirk because they found some selenite there that resembled Russia's selkie stone. There was no freshwater source close by so they had to pump out rainwater to use as drinking water for their settlement which later became Bellevue, Washington. When they ran out of water they started building canals to get more water from other sources like glaciers or rivers nearby. In 1872, John Dutton became head trader for Puget Sound Fur Company and started shipping goods through this area. He named one of his boats "Lake Stevens" in honor of his home town in Scotland. Settlement continued untilafter World War II when lumber prices decreased and more people left for similar-sized towns elsewhere in America. As development occurred aroundthe lake, it began taking on an ever-larger impact on environmental conditions including overmining of forests nearbyand creating large areas where nothing grew but weed growth because no trees could be found to fell without damaging property or impacting water levels (Langdon v Padden). In recent years there has been some effort made to restore lost resources such as wetlands alongthelake as part of efforts to reduce flooding risks associated with climate change (Becker). Overall though, much work remainsto be done before Lake Stevens can become another park or recreational site within our local community like Olympia or SeaTac which have seen great success in preserving their natural resources (Gould).

The first white men to set foot in what is now Washington were the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804. The area was part of the Northwest Territory until it became part of the United States in 1791. In 1853, Congress passed a bill creating Puget Sound Territorial District, which included all of present-day Washington. On July 24, 1855, the district was made official by President James K.
