Lake Stevens was first named by Captain George Vancouver in 1792 when he and his crew of the HMS Victoria anchored on its shores. The name is derived from a local tribe, the Stevens Indians. A small village, present-day Stevenson, developed around the site of their summer encampment. In 1851, Congress created the Puget Sound Indian Reservation to contain all Native Americans living east of the Cascade Mountains. The reservation was designated as part of what is now Washington state. In 1928, Lake Stevens was made a national park by President Franklin D. Roosevelt under the National Park Service Act. The park includes 5 miles (8 km) of shoreline along Puget Sound and contains over 100 campsites and 22 hiking trails that lead to scenic viewpoints along the canal system that runs through it.
Lake Stevens, Washington history began in the late 1800s when a group of Russian immigrants settled in the area. The Russians started a small farm and also built a log cabin that is still standing today. In 1903, the U.S. government bought the farm for $1,000 and moved the Russian immigrants to Seattle to start their own community. The first school was opened in 1909 and soon after, a post office was established as well. In 1916, the Lake Stevens Dam was constructed to provide water power for local industries and it has been used ever since.
