Lake Stevens was also home to a major lumber industry during the early 20th century; sawmills were built along both sides of the James River near present-day Seattle. However, production ceased after World War II due to competition from more efficient mills in Canada and Asia. Today, Lake Stevens is a popular tourist spot with – among other things – a large number of fishing lakes including Biwabon Creek (pictured), which has excellent white bass fishing year round; hiking/ biking trails; picnic areas; art galleries; as well as several restaurants and bars located on or around one or more of its seven miles of shoreline.
