Lake Stevens is a small town in Washington, D.C., about 20 miles east of the city center on I-5. The population was 5,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of Prince George's County. The first European to visit what is now known as Lake Stevens was Capt. James Cook in 1792 while exploring British Columbia. He named the area "Mt. Baker" after an American general who had fought against the British in North America during the war of 1812—the only time that Britain and America fought each other directly. In 1814, Ulysses S Grant and his army crossed over from Canada and attacked Fort Vancouver on the north side of the lake near present day Tacoma, Wash., driving out all but a few hundred Native Americans who had chosen to remain there rather than submit to white domination. The site became called Grant's Landing because General Ulysses S Grant located it here when he took command of Union forces invading Georgia in 1864 during the Civil War.
