He built a cabin on what is now State Route 174 and named it "Longview". In 1853 Joshua Green sold him an acre of land two miles east of present-day Longview for $2 per acre. This location became home to the first store and post office in Longview when it opened on February 4, 1854. In 1865 Captain George Waddell disembarked his ship "New York" at Seattle with supplies and members of the First Regiment Washington Volunteer Infantry under General Nathaniel Banks to campaign against slavery in Oklahoma Territory. At long last American troops had landed in Northwest Territory! After being met by native chiefs they marched southward into Indian Territory and finally reached their destination after spending eight days marching through cold weather rainforest upriver from present-day Tacoma before reaching Yukon River where they rendezvoused with General Banks's forces nearpresent day Aberdeen. Ulysses S Grant ordered Major General Alfred Terry detached from Banks's army and march northward instead which stopped the advance of Native Americans so that General Terry could return home with reinforcements for Grant's next offensive against the Indians). Ida Swan McClellan (1861-1937), wife of General George McClellan (1856-1934) served as First Lady of America during World War I while living at Arlington House in Alexandria Virginia; she later moved to nearby Georgetown where she resided until her death in 1937 (). She was buried adjacent to her husband at Arlington National Cemetery (). A plaque commemorates Ida Swan McClellan located outside the White House gates reads: “Ida Swan McCorman – Born Near Longview December 1861 AD & Died January 1937” . Mrs. McClellan is one of only three women ever honored by inclusion within a presidential monument.. A post office called “Longitude” was established at Longview on February 4, 1854, by Fenton Cope with mail delivered twice daily from Olympia Fields east to Sedro Woolley via ferries across Elliott Bay; however due to low volume this service ceased operations May 15th 1860 upon expiration of its contract with Postmaster Cope. On November 5th 1870 James Morrison set out overland from Fort Vancouver along side other pioneers including Captains John Stevens Powell and David Thompson travelling 3 weeks unsupported down river past present day Portland Oregon before arriving safely back near Fort Vancouver October 10th 1771 without incident or loss
