In 1923, George Long died at age 95 years old and was buried in his home farmstead across from the original log cabin settlement on the east side of the Anacortes River. His wife Rebecca continued to live in Longview until her death in 1965 at age 94 years old. Longview is a town in King County, Washington. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bellevue–Everett metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Longview was Isaac Stevens, who arrived in 1855. Stevens built a cabin on the east side of present-day Longview Boulevard and named it Stevensville. He also developed a small farm around what is now the intersection of Hastings Road and Park Avenue. In 1865, John Byers established himself in what is now Longview with his family. Byers was one of many early settlers who came to King County during the Gold Rush era. He founded Whatcom City on land he purchased from the Fraser River people near Mount Baker. In 1868, Byers married Anna Maria Smith, daughter of Major George Smith of Seattle Township (later Snohomish County). The town's first school opened in 1870 as an academy for girls under instruction by Miss Sarah Weems (1825-1910), an educator from Lynden Academy in Bellevue, Washington Territory (now Douglas County). The school closed about 1930 due to lack of students and donations from property owners making up its budget; however, remnants can still be found today at longVIEWAmenities@hotmail.com . Longview grew rapidly during annexation by Everett in 1907-08 following the creation ofKing county as a result of statehood proceedings that took place that year. Prior to annexation there were only scattered settlements dotting acres along roads leading into Everett proper – nothing like today’s sprawling development seen all around town center or even inside Everett city limits! A few residents had accommodations within Everett proper but most lived close enough to workaday amenities yet far enough away not to count as “inside” residents despite beholding Everett everyday on their television sets! During annexation much building took place including more than one new grocery store and several churches which served both locals and visitors alike; such growth must have been quite impressive since local taxes paid for all this infrastructure plus other associated expenses like streetlights and sewers! After annexation much movement between various parts of King county ensued with businesses expanding onto new sites where they could find easier access to customers/landlords/taxpayers etc., creating what we know today as Bellevue–Everett metropolitan area!
