Lynden, Washington is a census-designated place in Puget Sound, Washington, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. Lynden was founded in 1881 as an agricultural colony named after General James H. Lynden and his wife Jennie Ladd. The name change to its current form in 1907 when the town became central to logging operations in the region. In 1967, Lynden annexed nearby Elma and began developing it into a major bedroom community for Bellevue and Tacoma merchants and professionals. Lynden's commercial center has since become an important engine of local economic growth, with restaurants, banks and other businesses clustered around one business district near Interstate 5W. The history of Lynden goes back more than 125 years; it was first known as General James H. Lynden Colony on May 12th 1881 when Colonel John Cohan came here from Canada to purchase land for a new post on Point Defiance Bay south of Olympia Ferry Landing (present day Tacoma). At that time there were only five hundred people living in this area including farmers and loggers who had come overland from British Columbia during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-1898 which brought great wealth to these pioneers who built roads, schools and churches along the way…. In 1907 when Centralia Junction arrived on the scene things changed dramatically with eastern logging companies comingrunner through our town looking for good virgin timber which quickly became available due to changes in production laws following WWI…. so much so that by 1919 Centralia Junction had effectively disappeared leaving only about 50 houses standing….. what remained consisted mostly of frame buildings used as stores or office buildings by various lumber companies until finally being destroyed by fire in 1984…. but even today you can still see some remnants of those original buildings dating back to 1881………Centralia Junction & Lynden were both once very significant logging towns originally part of what was then called King County & their fortunes changed rapidly because they had access to water resources which allowed them to outdo their competitors both inland & downriver………
Lynden was founded in 1881 by George and Anna Hays, who homesteaded the land on which the city stands. The city's first mayor, John A. Lynden, was elected in 1885. In 1904, Lynden became one of the first cities in Washington state to annex land from neighboring cheatgrass-covered towns. The annexation created a new neighborhood within the city limits - Lynden Heights - that still exists today. In 1907, Lynden annexed another town, Renton, located east of downtown. This annexation led to a larger population growth for both cities because it allowed for more development and services within their boundaries. The two cities merged into one in 1912 as part of a statewide effort to consolidate all municipalities with a population over 10,000 people. Since then, Lynden has seen various expansions and renovations throughout its history including: an addition of a new library in 1962; an expansion of city hall during the 1990s; and construction ofseveral bridges across Puget Sound during the 2000s.
