Mercer Island, located in the Puget Sound region of Washington state, is home to an interesting binocular history. The island was first settled by Native American people and later became part of the Whatcom Treaty Colony. In 1851, the United States Exploring Expedition discovered and named this area Whaleback Bay after Capt. John J. whaleback, a member of the expedition. The discovery of oil on nearby Bellingham Island in 1901 led to increased interest in the area and led to the founding of a petroleum production company on Mercer Island called ExxonMobil in 1912. The island has been used for military purposes as well as civilian activities such as agriculture and forestry since it was first settled by humans. The U.S Coast Guard's Whaling Station at Dolphin Point began operations on Orcas Island in 1926 and continued until 1969 when they moved to Mercer Island due to its more favorable conditions for ship launching from Elliott Bay Naval Shipyard on Mercer Island (see photo below). Binoculars were probably created about 350 BC when two ancient Greeks named Ptolemy and Hippocrates developed a type of telescope known as a teleskope which could be used for viewing things up close that were too small or far away for optical telescopes then available (see photo below). By 300 BC, binoculars had become widely available throughout Greece and Rome thanks to travelers who brought these devices back with them during their travels (see photo below). In 1795, Nicholas-Jacques Conte patented what is now known as the “Conte lens” which allowed users to view tiny details within large objects such as flowers without having them cut down into pieces (see photo below). This invention would soon lead to advances in photography which helped make photography possible than ever before!
