The city also developed its own water system which remained operational until 1979 when it was replaced by Seattle's new sewers During World War II, Monroe played an important role as a training ground for American military personnel recruited through local recruit stations located throughout the Puget Sound region. In 1943 alone, 1 percent of all Tacoma's workforce originated from Monroe; this number increased to 5 percent during 1945-1946 due to wartime demand for skilled laborers unable to find work elsewhere. Since its incorporation into Seattle on April 20th of that year, 1975 has been a time of growth for Monroe residents with many new businesses opening up around town including several large grocery stores along with renovation projects such as replacing streetlights with LEDs which have since saved taxpayers hundreds of dollars each year . As recently as 2006-2007 there were plans to add another block off 8th Avenue SE towards downtown but due to funding shortages no action has been taken yet
