Mount Vernon, Washington is a town in Spokane County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Mount Vernon is known for its Historic District and National Register of Historic Places listings including the Mount Vernon House and Grounds and the George Washington Presidential Library. The town was named after General George Washington by his wife Martha Custis Lee. The first European to set eyes on what would later become Mount Vernon was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he sighted the rise of Mt. Vernon from his ship "Rochester" while sailing through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. He called it "Penhueck", but no one knows who named it after him or where he got this name from. One story has it that General John Forbes organized a search for a new location for Fort Niagara near present-day Buffalo, New York in 1776 because he wanted to protect British trade interests coming into Canada with fur goods from America via Great Britain's colonies in North America. At some point during this process, Forbes acquired land east of present-day Spokane Falls which included what is now Mount Vernon Township and part ofpresent-day Spokane County. General Washington purchased many parcels of this land over time as well as adjacent parcels north and east of Spokane Falls until all but 2/3rds of the current township had been acquired by 1802 when he gave final approval for incorporation as Mount Vernon Township under direction from Congress under President James Knoppers Act (1802). In 1834, Arapaho Chief Josephice Thunder Cloudoway led an attack against white settlers near present day Mt Pleasant which resulted in 4 white men being killed along with 11 horses and three cows; this event is also said to be responsible for making Indian trails difficult to travel due to surface scars still remaining today indicative of battle ground conditions at that time. On July 4, 1792, when George Washington took office as president of the United States he moved into Mount Vernon with his family and staffs following his inauguration on April 14th of that year. On October 25th, 1800 Congress voted to purchase land adjoining Georgetown for $10 million to create Arlington National Cemetery which would house all American presidents from then through 2040! President John F Kennedy added more land for ${8} million in 1966 and conducted renovations to include a golf course and tennis court during his presidency!
