Mukilteo is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. Mukilteo was platted in 1853 by General Nelson A. Miles and his wife Rebecca Keyes Miles as a small village on the east bank of rapids that flows from Mukilteo Lake into Puget Sound. The name means "place where two rivers meet." In 1861, when Mukilteo became an incorporated town, it had a population of 350 people; by 1870 it had increased to 1,000 people and by 1890 to 4,000 people. By 1910 its population had reached 10,719 people. The first store in Mukilteo was built on First Avenue in 1868; it closed in 1883 because of difficulties with getting permits to build near the water's edge. The first post office opened in 1872; it closed in 1903 because of difficulties getting mail through rapids on the river. The first telephone service was available in 1916; it replaced telegraph service until 1938. In 1918 Mukilteo became home to what is now known as Japanese Gardens after local residents donated land for the purpose It also served as a training ground for naval aviators during World War II and later served as a military base for defense purposes during peacetime until 1971 when it reverted back to civilian control In 1984 Mukilteo voted 3-2 to become an independent city following years of planning and $5 million investment from then-Mayor Norm Stamper On July 1st 1992 Mukilteo became an unincorporated community under jurisdiction of King County .
