The annexation created tension between these two jurisdictions because South Seattle had voted to secede from Mukilteo while North Seattle remained within Mukilteo's borders. In 1941, after months of wrangling, both communities agreed to merge into one municipality with a population of 22,000 residents. Today, Mukilteo remains an agricultural community based largely on fruit farming and fishing; however, it also has significant retail sectors including stores such as Safeway and Microsoft Surface sales locations as well as restaurants like Pizzeria Unito which serve Italian cuisine. In recent years there has been development in the area around town specifically towards pedestrians living near busy intersections who may not be able to vehicular access due to surface boulevards or bike lanes. This effort includes installation of new sidewalks as well as widening streets for increased pedestrian convenience combined with landscaping changes that improve visibility for drivers when looking down at intersection entrances/exit ramps from I-5 southbound truck lanes).
