Sutherland developed it into a corn kernel farm known as "Sutherland's Land" which he leased to farmers and other businessmen until his death in 1933. After his death, his wife sold most of their land to various individuals and businesses who continued to use it for agricultural purposes until 1975 when it was donated to the city by her son-in-law Don Guthrie III in memory of his father-in-law David Guthrie Sr.. In 1865, John Jacob Astor built a steamboat terminal on the east side of Island Lake for navigation by steamboats from Tacoma and Olympia to Squalicum Bay on the west side of Puget Sound. The Astor Terminal was destroyed in a storm in 1892 but its ruins still stand today as part of Soo Lumber's mill complex on Main Street across from State Route 99E (now I-5). The first post office in Oak Harbor was established on December 12, 1868, under the name Southport. The current post office building was completed in 1915 and is located at 308 2nd Avenue SE. The University of Washington Agricultural Experiment Station opened in 1924 as one of two research stations operated by USDA during World War II. The other station was at Bothell which closed its doors after the war due to lack of funding However Oak Harbor Research Station remains active today providing research support for local farmers and food processors throughout Pierce County
