In 1907, when Tacoma became an independent city limits extension to east Tacoma from King County under then-governor Albert Puyallup's proposal to create more centralized government control over Tacoma's neighborhoods growth,[1]Oak Harbor became one of its many annexations as part of that city's growth.[2][3] In 1912 when King County annexed most of Pierce Island[4],Oak Harbor also became annexation territory for that county as well as for Seattle annexed byKing County following territorial expansion within King County during the 1910s due to efforts by Governor William Cullen Bryant to gain national prominence through several ambitious public works projects including constructing Interstate 5 (later Interstate 90), creating Puget Sound National Park Reserve including portions of present-day Oak Harbor Peninsula,[5]and building what are now the developer-owned oceanfront properties along Elliott Bay adjacent to downtownSeattle including One Elliot Way On July 1st 1922 voters rejected incorporation into Seattle because they believed that doing so would have given away too much valuable waterfront property which they wanted for their own community development purposes only distant from downtownSeattle while at the same time giving away tax benefits to developers who had already contributed heavily towards City coffers On November 3rd 1922 residents convened a special meeting called "Annexation cannot be accomplished without input" where they decided instead to become an unincorporated community within Seattle with full voting rights and powers similar to those enjoyed by cities such as Lynnwood or Ballard

Oak Harbor is a town in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,549 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1887 by George W. Christiansen and named after Oak Harbor on Puget Sound. The first permanent settler in what is now Oak Harbor was John Haines who arrived in 1847. He built his home about two miles (3 km) south of the present site of the town on what is now called Endicott Lake. Haines sold his land to Captain George Merrill for $100 in 1852 and began to build a log cabin which he named "Merrill's Cabin". He also started to cultivate some land around this cabin with help from local farmers and their families. In 1865, Captain Merrill married Miss Emma Cushing and moved into their cabin with her and their four children; they renamed it "Merrill House". Mrs. Merrill died in 1912 while living there with her son Capt.(now retired) Merrill Jr., daughter Alice, son-in-law Drury & daughter Mildred, & grandaughter Nellie Gorman (Gorman later purchased part of the house). In 1904 Capt.(now retired) Merrill Sr., wife Mrs.(now deceased), 2 daughters plus 3 sons lived at "Merrill House" during World War I when it served as an Army barracks; all were employed by Boeing Aircraft Co.; later bought by Douglas Aircraft Co.. Postmaster J.H.'s family occupied one wing of the house from 1923 until they moved out in 1975 when post office consolidation into Cheney closed down most branches east of Tacoma but not Oak Harbor so J."haness Wing" continued as a private residence until 1985 when it became part of Cheney Senior Citizen Services Incorporated which continues today as Elmira senior citizen services OHV Complex located just north of downtown on Main Street next to City Hall Annex building behind Northgate Mall In 1915 Norway Lumber company set up shop here to build planes out of pine trees donated by Seattle lumber baron James Purdy Captain Harry Olsen operated a small store near the edge of town from 1917 until 1922 First school opened here: Maple Hill School District #2 on November 15th 1919 First telephone line: Northwest Bell Telephone Company trunk line extending from Everett to Mukilteo via Birch Bayou connecting with Olympia across Elliott Bay On July 1st 1925 President Franklin D Roosevelt visited local plant where Boeing had been making planes . . . Roosevelt made speech condemning 'sweaty hands' job competition among American companies that was spreading throughout nation Roosevelt's plane manufacturing plants were located at Everett/Bellevue WA , Canoga Park CA , Renton WA before moving production back to Seattle finally ending assembly line at Bellevue Mar 1940 Oak Harbor experienced rapid growth following World War II based on its naval aviation industry output which led Naval Air Station Whidbey Island which became Naval Air Station Everett during 1950s During 1960s through 1970s many new businesses opened such as seafood restaurant Catch 24 Federal Way NW called Seafood Connection; disco club Flashlight Lounge ; Custom Carpeting Shoppe ; Hardware store Bob's Discount Hardware since 1978 During late 1980s through early 1990s recession hit town hard resulting in many businesses close including Fisheries News Service relocated operations inside city hall annex building starting January 1990 until May 1991 fire destroyed mainframe control room destroying much if not all data stored within few weeks despite efforts by several thousand volunteer firefighters
