British settlement began in 1847 when Lieutenant Colonel George Vancouver founded Fort George at present-day Pasco as part of an effort to expand British influence along the coast southward from Tacoma. As railroads became available throughout Oregon and Washington State, settlers began traveling eastward through what is now Pasco Canyon for coal and other goods arriving by train at floating wooden docks near today's downtown area before shipment by land across Lake Union to points farther down Puget Sound or further inland where markets could be located ashore or on riverside sites such as Duwamish River between Olympia and Bellevue (later Redmond). Mines were developed at nearby Anacortes (then called Cape Flattery) during this time period as well; gold was found near Goldendale early in this century but exploration failed to produce significant results until 1909 when prospectors discovered large amounts of silver ore within easy striking distance of modern day Pasco proper including Echo Basin which has produced some $14 million worth total since 1959 alone! Pasco, Washington is a small town in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 6,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pasco-Hoquiam- message center Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Pasco was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on October 25, 1542, who named it San Francisco de la Boca de Agua Caliente (Spanish for "the water cold spring"), after his ship La Brea Tar Pits which stayed there for three days while he explored the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Strait of Malaspina. In 1792, entrepreneur George Vancouver explored the Puget Sound area and came across what is now Pasco County on May 10 when he anchored his ships at Whatcom Inlet. He called it Nisqually River because its water was so clear that ships could see upriver to Nisqually Falls where they took fresh water from an aquifer before sailing back down again toSeattle). A post office called Pasco has been in operation since 1853. When gold started being discovered in California in 1848, many people moved westward into what became Oregon Territory looking for new opportunities for gold mining and settlement. A group led by James Crippen founded Tacoma in 1851 and decided to establish a town here because they believed that land east of Tacoma would be more advantageous for development given its proximity to river mouths and navigable waterways. When word got out about this potential gold rush town near Seattle, people from all over descended upon Tacoma during the next few years until it had a population of around 5,000 people just under two miles wide between King Street south and Fremont Avenue north; today’s University District contains much of this original commercial district as well as modern buildings including several restaurants and bars built during one period when downtown business flourished as a result of regular Alliedair bombardments over Tacoma during World War II). The discovery of silver at Washoe Lake in 1850 motivated other miners to come to Tacoma – some arriving by boat while others walked through dense forests with no other way out until they reached Gold Rush country by rail or horseback riders via trails that paralleled the banks of the Willamette River then crossed open meadowslands before reaching salt marshes near present day mile marker 26 on Highway 99W beyond Coeur d'Alene Tribal Reservation boundaries; these same areas were later developed into what are today's Pioneer Square neighborhood (northwest side) and Microsoftowntown neighborhood (southwest side) .
