The history of firearms in Port Angeles, Washington goes back to the early 1800s. One of the first guns ever made in this town was a muzzleloader called the “Butterfly”. The pistol that is today known as the .45 ACP was first developed here in Port Angeles and is still used by law enforcement and game hunting enthusiasts today. In 1892, James Wickersham founded Japanese-owned Wickersham & Overton Firearms Company on 5th Avenue in downtown Port Angeles. This company manufactured pistols and revolvers under license from Colt, among other companies. In 1924, Wickersham & Overton merged with J&B Guns Manufacturing Company to form J&J Gun & Rifle Corporation. This company continued manufacturing handguns until it closed in 1978. In 1933, Tacoma Gunsmiths opened its doors on Commercial Street in downtown Tacoma and began making rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers under the name Tacoma Armory Incorporated. This company continued manufacturing firearms until it closed in 1984. In 1984, gun manufacturers Charles Daly (a local entrepreneur) and Don McMillin bought the assets of Tacoma Armory Incorporated and reopened the business as Daly-McMillin Arms Corporation with operations located at 777 4th Ave SE in Tacoma, WA until 1992 when they sold their share to Charles Daly himself who ran it as a sole proprietorship for several years before selling it to Bob Bowers again who operated it until his death in 2006. Since then there have been occasional sales of parts back to Charles Daly’s descendants but overall ownership has reverted back to local entrepreneurs who continue operating Daly-McMillin Arms Corporation out of their garage at 777 4th Ave SE
