In the early 1800s, Port Angeles was a thriving port town and the home to one of the most important fur trading posts in Northwest America. The area that now includes Port Angeles was first settled by Native Americans in the region around what is today Seattle. For many years, it was one of the most heavily populated areas in northwest Washington. In 1851, a group of Englishmen who had come overland from Oregon set up shop in what is now downtown Port Angeles. They quickly became known as the "Gentlemans of Pioneer Square." The town's fortunes declined after gold and silver were discovered at Seattle in 1853. The Gentlemans moved their business operations to Tacoma, Washington, where they continued to operate until 1861 when they sold their interests in Puget Sound country to new investors. At this point, Port Angeles essentially ceased to exist as a community and its residents gradually drifted away over time. However, some people remained connected to the place through memories and stories – including John Youngblood (1819-1900), an American fur trader who operated out of what is now Olympia before moving his business operations back into Puget Sound in 1901. After World War II ended, many local entrepreneurs revived efforts to bring back industry and commerce toPort Angeles through various businesses ventures such as marketing services and tourism initiatives. However, all those efforts came about little more than decade later when economic conditions changed so dramatically that port activity effectively stopped throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s due largely to competition from neighboring King County’s Boeing facilities on ferries crossing Lake Union Boulevard between Portland and Seattle. Only during recent times has there been any real effort underway within city government or with private sector partners – spearheaded by Mayor Rick Petersen –to revive active retail businesses along Main Street which runs smack dab between Everett Avenue (the old industrial waterfront) on one side and Dock Road on another; gateway shopping for locals seeking easy access Interstate 5 traffic heading southbound or eastbound out of town while also offering views across Elliott Bay towards downtown Everett; potential development potential for additional office buildings/residential space overlooking Elliot Bay should market conditions warrant it; open space beyond Main Street currently occupied by commercial warehouses used primarily for storage/laundry purposes could be redeveloped into parkland with attractive public amenities if desired
