The first people to live in what is now Puyallup were the Nisqually Indians who hunted and collected game on the local mountains. In 1851, Captain John Tilton of the U.S. Navy built a small cabin on Hwy 30 near present-day Puyallup to store goods he had brought overland from Olympia. This was followed by other homesteaders until 1888 when Puyallup became a town with its own school system and post office. In 1907, an oil well was drilled in what is now Thurston County and production began bringing money back to Puyallup which led to more development including; an airport (now Sea-Tac Airport), shopping malls, churches and homes around today's downtown area." The first written account of Puget Sound comes from Juan de Fuca who wrote about it while exploring northwest America in search of new areas for Spanish settlement in 1592-93 He noted "the great bay called Puget Sound" extending inland as far as his eye could see Thereafter exploration by Europeans increased dramatically due to discoveries along the Columbia River southward from Vancouver Island beginning with Gabriel García Márquez's voyage along that river in 1768 and later David Thompson's journey upriver in 1811 which marked large sections of British North America open for European settlement." After years of exploration various claims were made for control over this vast land including; King George's Land west of Tacoma (not sold to France) then Northwest Territory claimed by England but finally claimed by Washington Territory when it was organized as part of territorial boundaries following Oregon Treaty on October 12th 1847 Finally after much fighting both British Canada eastward into what are now Yakima Valley and Mexican Mexico westward into what are now Stevens Straitclaimed by both countries all land lying between Spirit Lake found east side on Olympic Peninsula (now Snohomish County) and Puget Sound included within modern day Thurston County thus forming one contiguous entity known as Northwest Territorial Lands ."

After spending two years on board HMS Discovery during her circumnavigation of North America he served aboard HMS Scylla as part of Commodore Botterill's flagship at anchor off Sitka Alaska" On July 4th 1814 he resigned from his commission through illness then sailed home via Cape Horn On October 10th 1840 he married Mable Hutton at Nisqually Point where they had resided since December 19th 1839 when they left Seattle for Tacoma Washington They had one child together Mable died 3 days after their arrivalMable's husband Captain Georgep Ayres took them upriver to live near his brothers farm before sailing back down again Captain Ayres returned downriver to help load goods onto ships bound for Japan when news arrived of Wordie’s Rebellion starting on November 9th 1840 ." Now living at Port Townsend Washington Captains Ayres & Hutton decided to move back upriver again ."In June 1841 they moved back upstream about 2 miles into what is now called Crystal Falls after hearing about goldfields there They got involved with prospecting however no gold were found so they abandoned this idea soon after . About this time Captains Airey & Hutton started teaching school girls how to read & write . From here things went more smoothly until about 1850 when land prices changed so much that Captains Airey & Hutton decided to sell all their holdings except for one acre which still stands today next door NE corner lot #33 ."This property later became known as Fort Lawley Park ."In 1850 or earlierCaptains Airey &Hutton met Washoe Indian Chief Josephine Heyes who recommended them against selling their land because she thought it might be taken over by white people 360 acres east side NW corner lot #6 Heyes sold them this parcel which became known as Olympic National Forest Today."Nowadays most people believe that Captain Gouverneur Pennington did actually purchase this land from Heyes although we do not know for sure …"The first post office opened in 1861 under name “Everett” It closed due to lack of customers around 1870 The first store open probably 1870″Today we have mail service thru PO Box 790″………..So much going on throughout our history here I could go on forever!
