On February 11th 1861 by proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln (Ulysses S Grant), Puget Sound Territory was divided into two parts: one including Renton with its own charter as an independent City under the name "Bellevue", while the other including Seattle with its own charter as an independent City under the name "Seattle". On March 17th 1861 Bellevue changed their Charter to become an incorporated City with same boundaries as Seattle but no Vote or representation within either City Council

After years of construction (and some destruction), Douglas' mill became one of America's first sawmills when it operated successfully until 1922. During World War II there were three hospitals in Renton: One opened as a military hospital in 1942 by Major General Edwin Ewell with help from Drs Lewis Hill and Luther Burbank; another opened as an American Red Cross shelter during World War II by Drs Lewis Hill and Luther Burbank; and finally a pediatric ward opened as part of Children’s Hospital Northwest by Drs Lewis Hill and Luther Burbank in 1945 followingaughter Bessie’s death from leukemia at age six months old at Seattle Children’s Hospital The last major development in downtown Renton occurred prior to annexation byKing County on February 14, 1907 when attorney Augustus Kelley purchased property east of Seventh Street between Union Boulevard and Emerson Road for $8500 from developer Jacob Riis who had earlier donated land for that purpose along with four acres north of First Avenue west of Interstate 5 between Union Boulevard and Emerson Road also known as “Kelley Place” The site plan included two blocks long main street running northeast/southwest with side streets Albano Drive (north) / Copley Drive (south) running parallel thereto arterial roads leading off main street such as 7th Street NW / Second Avenue NE / Capitol Way NE intersecting here particularly arterial routes leading away from town center including 12th Street NW
