Richland, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Richland were small Native American groups who hunted and gathered natural resources near the present-day city of Seattle. They called their land "Moccasin Ridge," after a local tree that grew plentifully thereabouts. In 1851, when gold was discovered in the region, some residents decided to settle there because it offered good prospects for mineral development and its location on the Chugach River made it an ideal staging ground for wagon trains transporting metals out of California to be smelted into coins or bars. In 1852, Captain John Fife organized a group of men from various counties east of Puget Sound to prospect for gold in what became known as Gold Hill Township west of Richland Creek. In 1865–1866 General George Wright conducted an exploratory survey which identified several potential sites for a new county seat; he recommendedRichland as one of them but no action was taken until 1868 when commissioners voted 3-2 to select Everett over Richland on the grounds that Everett had more population and better transportation links with Seattle. After years of wrangling between wealthy landowners and city officials about where the new county seat should be located, control over Richland passed from Everett to Tacoma in 1907 following a vote by residents on an election question seeking annexation into Tacoma voided by then Mayor John Denny because Denny believed that Annexation would provide more financial benefits for Everett than would Richland. The City of Tacoma took over responsibility for both towns during World War II until their respective governments were reorganized under state laws establishing Tacoma as an independent city within King County again effective January 1st 1945). In 1955–1956 plans were made to build Interstate 5 through much of northwestern King County including parts of both RichLAND and Everett; these plans were scrapped after protests from both communities which saw themselves as victimized by I-5 construction plans they felt had not been fair nor equitable given their past experiences with highway engineering projects throughoutKing County including plans by Puget Sound Bridge & Tunnel Company (PNBT) which at that time controlled most aspects of highway construction in western Washington – such as thoseresponsible for developing I-5 through RichLAND – while Boeing built its facilities nearby at Beech Point industrial park across Elliott Bay from downtown Seattle upon completion of its federally funded 777 program (the first large airplane assembly plant in North America). When PNBT failed financially during the early 1970s amid deregulation & restructuring within Northwest airline industry[1], it lost key supporters among some elected officials who saw it as another example how business interests could interfere with government decisions regarding infrastructure development[2]. However Boeing eventually sold its operations at Beech Point [3] and today only portions offormerly PNT's former property remain undeveloped .
