It is the smallest of the four Thurston County towns and is within the city of Auburn. Shoreline was founded in 1892 by George Fenton and named after his farm on Puget Sound. In 1916, shoreline merchants formed a cooperative to promote land development along Puget Sound's eastern border with Tacoma. A year later, they organized a town government and designated it as their primary business center. A post office was established in 1918, and commercial growth spurred development throughout the 1920s and 1930s. By 1940, however, most ofshoreline's businesses had closed or relocated to Tacoma because of competition from other rural communities in Thurston Countywest of Seattle. The only remaining commercial sector until the mid-1980s was agriculture which continues today as an important part of local economy
