At first, Spokan Falls residents resisted annexing their community because they believed it would mean loss of jobs and social services provided by Spokan Falls churches and schools; however, over time they came to appreciate how important economic development had become for their city center since annexation. The local school district was transferred from Coeur d'Alene to Swanson in 1959; howeverswithout any major changes to institutional seating or student wings it continued to serve students from both cities until it merged with Clarkston School District #1 in 2001 Since 2000 King High School has been located within walking distance east Campus Mall which opened in fall 2006 with a $130 million dollar renovation project that included new classrooms/lofts/entertainment areas/. On November 4th 2009 King announced plans to move out of campus mall into an urban redevelopment called "Kingtown". This plan calls for a massive mixed use project including office space/retail stores/, residential units/a hotel/, parks/, etc.. Kingtown will be built next door to where current University Village shopping center stands today
