The town was founded in 1851 by farmers and their families who became known as the "Tumwater Five." The five founders were: Isaac Bird, James W. Peck, Elijah Purdy, John A.Dixon, and John Leland. They started a store and post office in what is now the heart of the town and began to grow with their crops and cattle. In 1858 they moved from their original farmstead to a more spacious one on the banks of the river. Here they built a new brick courthouse which still stands today. In 1865 they voted to rename themselves Tumwater after General George Custer's Battle of Montana's Little Bighorn Creek Valley where he lost his life that day while leading an attack against Sioux Indians near Tumwater Lake
