A second school open from November 10th through December 1st 1870 continued until February 4th1871 when it burned down due to a lightning strike; its replacement opened on March 2nd and continued until September 8th that year when it also burned down due to a lightning strike; this second school remains standing today as First Unitarian Universalist Church (formerly Sacred Heart Catholic Church). In 1880, lumberman Edwin Durnell donated land for an industrial park which would include mills and other manufacturing plants. With construction starting soon afterwards there were numerous stores and businesses opening up around town including Winton's Drug Store (founded by John Winton), J&J Barber Shop (opened by John Jenson), National Lead Mines & Smelting Co., Russian-American Bank (opened by George Arbuckle), Pacific Telephone Co., Empire Coal Mining Co., American Can Company (owned by Everson Dickinson) and Meads Drug Store. During World War I there were many military hospitals set up near or inside of town including Camp Floyd which treated casualties from battle areas such as Manassas Junction battlefield where over 50% of all US fatalities occurred during that conflict The 1918 flu pandemic swept through America causing mass layoffs throughout the industry with many towns throughout America feeling the effects such as Tumwater which had a 99% decline in employment between 1918-1921 After World War II many companies left town leaving behind abandoned factories across King County such as Empire Coal Mines who still maintain an active mine today . Many residents moved away after 1970 when Seattle began annexing most ofKing County making Tumwater effectively redundant . Despite this decline some businesses remain active like First Unitarian Universalist Church which has seen continual growth over time . Today Tatiana's Bakery continues to be a staple for locals despite having faced challenges with fire recently
