Tumwater is a town in central Washington, United States. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census estimate. It is part of the Wenatchee-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Tumwater was George Vancouver in 1847. He built his home on the site of what is now the Courthouse Square shopping center. In 1861, Tumwater became an incorporated town and voted to build its own courthouse and jail. The first post office opened in 1865 and was named "Newcastle". The name change came about because most of the businesses located in Newcastle were operated by Canadians who had settled there during the Gold Rush era. In 1896, Seattle businessmen John Wickersham and James Ewing bought land east of present-day Tumwater for what would become Safeco Field (then known as "The Home Park"). They started construction on their stadium that year, but stopped when it became clear that they could not raise enough money to finish it. In 1903, they reopened the project with a new name: Mariners Stadium (later Safeco Field). The park hosted its first professional baseball game on October 15, 1903 against visiting Tacoma Tigers. During World War II, Tumwater served as an auxiliary airfield for Boeing Air Force Base#1 (now Boeing Air Force Base) northeast of town. After war ended, many factories closed down and people moved out; consequently, few reminders remain of wartime activity in Tumwater Township aside from a small number of historical buildings which have been significantly renovated since then and are currently used by local residents as homes or businesses
