A group led by Captain George Vancouver explored Juan de Fuca Strait on November 2nd 1792 after traveling down what is now Elliott Bay; they named this new place Nootka Island because Chief Nootka had warned them about a large island off shore which he claimed was capable of reaching 100 miles (160 km) wide and 200 feet (60 m) high. After landing here they continued their survey along present-day Issaquah Creek before returning back up Juan de Fuca Strait on October 10th 1793 aboard ship Royal George II/Discovery I following a passage discovered earlier by Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in his 1579 map of North America
