Washougal is a town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Olympia, WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Washougal comes from the Chinook word "wah-sha-wal" meaning "calm and beautiful place." In 1847, fur trader George H. Smith explored what is now Washougal and named it after his friend and mentor Captain John C. Frémont. By 1855, Washougal had become a thriving community with several stores and four churches. In 1865, gold was discovered at Puyallup River in nearby Tacoma and led to an influx of settlers to the area; many of whom were farmers who brought their animals across the river to prospect for gold nuggets on land that would later become Goldwater Park. In 1899, Wofford College graduate Charles Augustus Eliot founded Eliot School of Agriculture in Washougal which became one of the first private agricultural schools in Washington state. Over time, Eliot's school grew into one of Washington's most respected institutions with more than 250 students enrolled today. In 1923–24, Eliot donated land to create irrigation canals that now irrigate over 50 acres (20 hectares) of farmland surrounding his campus. Today, Eliot has three campuses: one located in Olympia; one near Seattle; and one off I-5 outside Pullman WA Washougal also played an important role during World War II when local residents organized as 'The United Service League' (USL) to provide food for troops stationed around Puget Sound region then under Japanese control (see Battle of Yakima). After the war ended in 1945 – following Japan's surrender – many veterans returned home and started families here in postwar Washougal; but some田舎者 continued golfing or fishing on what would soon be developed into one of history’s largest open spaces—the University District—home to both Wofford College’s main campus as well as scores of other businesses/residential buildings stretching back centuries before this present day! By 1870 Washougal had an agricultural population of 1500 with crops such as citrus fruits, grapesfruit trees and hops growing abundantly; fruit orchards included plums (Prunus lanatus), figs (Ficus religiosa) and apricots (Acer dispersum). In 1892 when WASH-TV first aired from Seattle on UHF channel 21 there was only one broadcast tower in King County that could receive TV signals so residents decided to build their own tower which they did by December 1st; this allowed them to see all of Seattle without having to go out into town. In 1912 WASH-TV moved from its original location on UHF channel 21 to its current location on VHF channel 3 which allowed it more bandwidth allowing for better reception including most rural areas within King County. This also meant that KING-TV could now be seen throughout much of Puget Sound providing local news coverage not possible before without moving away fromchannel 3 altogether! The station upgraded their facilities in 1958 which included new studios on First Avenue South just north of downtown Washougal; those days were long gone but still seen as some of the best television production facilities around! In addition to TV operations many businesses also started up during this time include banks (First National Bank & Trust Company was founded here in 1954), grocery stores (Kirkland Market opened in 1951), auto dealerships (Chrysler Corporation's Malibu dealership opened herein 1955) along with several restaurants like The Blue Nile restaurant where owner Eddie normal served chicken tikka masala until 1977 when he switched over to Indian cuisine! typos corrected
