Washougal is a town in Spokane County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. Washougal is located on the east side of the Spokane River and is part of the Spokane metropolitan area. The first white person to live in Washougal was William Clark in 1809. In 1847, Washougal acquired its current name from aviser David Washougal. David's father had named his son David after General George Washington and his grandson George Washington Jr.'s wife Martha (the daughter of Captain John Adams). David Washougal built a sawmill near where he lived in 1849 which became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed in 1907. He also owned land around what is now Main Street and built two churches, one for Presbyterians and one for Baptists. In 1886, Wm Gifford won an architectural competition to design a new courthouse for the town. The courthouse was completed in 1890 but proved too expensive to maintain and it was destroyed by fire in 1925. Washougal is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 6,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Washougal was founded in 1859 by Methodist missionaries, and has been a German-American community since its establishment. The town center is located on the banks of the river that forms its border with Thurston County to the south and east. The river runs through Washougal's core village before joining Puget Sound just north of Olympia. Its surface water resources are deficient, but it has developed an agricultural economy based on raising sheep and cattle, as well as potatoes and hops for beer production. Washougal formed from a series of small villages that clustered around two roads: one led to Olympia and one led to Mill Creek (now called Salmon Creek). These routes served as trade trails between Native Americans and settlers; many early residents were unauthorized traders who traveled along these roads without asking permission from local authorities. In 1859, Methodist missionaries founded what would become Washougal after traveling through this area on their way to preach in other parts of Canada. The first Christian church in Washougal was built on Main Street in 1865; it remains today as the only non-profit religious facility located within the town limits. In 1871, Washougallians voted to join King County; this occurred concurrent with other nearby towns such as Bellevue and Moses Lake which had also voted to become county seats.[2] In 1902, when Everett took over responsibility for all municipal services withinKingCounty from Bellevue,[3] Washougallians again voted to join King County under Everett's leadership.
