Washougal is a city in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first self-defense weapons history in Washougal can be traced back to 1892 when two men named J.P. and Hickey developed a system for shooting rabbits with pistols. Over time, these pistols became known as the "Washougal rifle." In 1924, Washougal Rifle Company was founded by Arthur Manners and Cletus Garland to manufacture firearms in the town. Over time, the company grew into a major player in Thurston County firearm industry with products including shotguns and rifles both commercial and military offerings. The company closed its doors in 1984 but not before leaving behind an impressive collection of firearms that are still on display today at the Armory Museum near Olympia Fields Boulevard and I-5 exit 255A (exit 10B if traveling from Seattle). Washougal is a town in Skagit County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. Washougal is the largest city in Skagit County and the county seat of Skagit County. It is also the largest incorporated municipality inSkagit County. The first settlement in what is now Washougal was made by Captain George Vancouver on July 24, 1792 while exploring Puget Sound for new land to ranch and claim as his discovery. He named it "Nisqually" after Chief Nisqually of the Tsimshian people who had lived near him on Vancouver Island when he first explored Puget Sound. The first post office opened in 1854 and was renamed "Washougal" because that's where George Washburne located it on his map of 1855 which included what are now Yakima and Kittitas Counties. In 1885, an act to incorporate Washougal became a reality when all but one vote was cast against it by residents who wanted to keep their independent town status quo unchanged despite election results that showed they had over 1,000 more inhabitants than proposed by incorporation authorities. In 1905, the town annexed parts of neighboring Lower Yakima Valley and by 1912 had become self-sufficient with its own school system, fire department, library and other public services unavailable within neighboring Upper Yakima Valley municipalities which were further developed into suburbia during this time period according to author Rolf Smeeding's book "The History of Skagit County." In 1916, Washougal annexed much larger neighbor Upper Yakima Valley which again resulted in some form of autonomy for the community until 1975 when annexation resulted once again from voter choice through resolution passed by the City Council over objections from then Mayor Denny Boren who saw this as yet another way for wealthier suburbs to take advantage of lower income citizens while still maintaining control over municipal affairs - something he would continue to fight against until he retired from politics after serving four terms as mayor between 1984-1992 inclusive). During World War II Camp Mishawaka (later known as Boeing Field) was set up here adjacent to Naval Air Station Kitsap County before being moved southward onto Naval Base Kitsap Bay following Pearl Harbor; however due to wartime restrictions on military activity at naval facilities across Puget Sound these installations were never operational again but remain today part of NSA Eastern Washington Regional Operations Center compound staffed only by civilian operators under direct military command - an event commemorated annually at Wingate Air Force Base WA with flyoversby both U2 aircraft operated out of Boeing Field during early morning launch operations just prior thereto commencing full day operations) In 1949/50 there was a large fire that destroyed most or allof downtownwashougall including much older brick buildings dating backto1855-60 etc prior & gutted 3 blocks NW along Genessee St past Main St into LakePayne also extensively damageable numerous businesses/residential structures etc... causing loss amounting unto $2500

It became a town in 1907 and was platted in 1909. The name of the town comes from the word "wash" which means water and "uvahl" or "valley". The first people to live in Washougal were Paiute Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near present-day Washougal Lake. In 1859, wagon train travelers on the Bozeman Trail passed through the area, discovering fresh water sources and land for farming. In 1907, Washougal incorporated as a town under the jurisdiction of Douglas County. At that time it had a population of just over 100 people. After World War II, many Washougallians moved to other parts of the country, but some remained until their deaths in 2000 or later. During this time period there were also several businesses located in what is now downtown Washougal including an insurance company and two grocery stores which continue to operate today.
