Wenatchee is a small town in Washington County, located on the Wenatchee River. The population was 6,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Spokane–Kahului Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Wenatchee means "big water" in the Chinook language, and it likely comes from Hidatsa word wenawa-taha meaning "the great big river." The first Europeans to visit what is now Wenatchee were fur traders working for Russian Fur Company in 1812. They named their little village Kamchatka after a island in the Kuskokwim River system off the coast of Siberia. The Russians moved out of Wenatchee by 1848 but left behind some Russian Orthodox churches and schools used by local Native Americans until they were abandoned in 1907 when Congress added Washington County to the state of Washington. The first post office was established at Wenatchee on December 3, 1847, by Jens Jensen with a mail service between Seattle and Yakima. By 1860, there were four auctions held here each week attracting buyers from all over Puget Sound area for goods brought downriver from Canada or California via boats bound for Tacoma or Olympia. At one point there were twenty-five auctioneers handling items including five miles of waterfront along the riverbanks! In 1907, Congress designated Washington County as part of what would become King County with its own government and court system (and no longer subject to county jurisdiction). As a result of this change, most businesses closed down around Wenatchee while other residents started anew making their homes within our boundaries while still using local terms like "Wenatchee" or "Chehalis". In 1948 an airstrip was built at Chehalis providing spotless flying conditions for locals during World War II military exercises which continued until 1964 when operations shifted to Kingman Air Force Base near Phoenix AZ after that airport became fully operational! The growth of Boeing plants throughout North America during the late 1940s led to employment growth for locals beginning in 1947 when Boeing began construction on its new plant adjacent to then undeveloped land just across SR 97 from downtown Wenatchee Creek Valley northward into what would eventually become Eastern Columbia Basin (now Eastern Okanogan) National Forest... today's city limits! Today's Boeing plant buildings stand where those original early 21st century manufacturing warehouses once did - proud symbols of industrial might and progressivism that continue to characterize our community today! Today's economy continues largely due to agriculture; however several large companies have made significant investments over recent years such as Microsoft & Amazon who both operate major facilities hereabouts; government contractors such as Obsolete Technologies; Reynolds American Incorporated has built a major presence downstream hereaboutsextending its product lines almost up against school districts east & west side especially around Old Town (& Empire) & elsewhere near Clearwater Lake creating some nice suburban/rural contrast . There are many interesting churches nearby also - St John’s Episcopal Church (#1), First Congregational Church (#2), Christ United Methodist Church (#3), Presbyterian church (#4), Methodist church (#5). There are also several restaurants scattered about including Benares Pizza ($) #6), Pillsbury Winery ($) #7), Fenton Brewing Company ($) #8) & Steak 'n Shake ($) #9). This designation helped to attract new residents to the community which saw rapid growth during World War II thanks to increased production at local munitions plants. In recent years, Wenatchee has seen a resurgence in its economy as an agricultural center with significant contributions from dairy farmers, hog farmers, timber producers and others who cultivate crops or provide services around the clock outside of town limits
