West Richland, Washington is a small town in Thurston County, Washington. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first recorded settler in West Richland was James Fenton on July 4, 1853. He and his family founded the town on land that he had purchased from the Government of Canada for $2 per acre. In 1867, JFenton donated an additional parcel of land to the town for use as a school district. The first teacher in West Richland was Mrs. Caulfield. In 1922, WForthrichy annexed neighboring communities of North Bend and Maple Valley to its borders; these annexations formed what is now known as Northwest Seattle Township. A fire destroyed most of the buildings in Maple Valley on November 3, 1924 and Fortuitously enough only four people were injured; this event became known as "The Fire That Burned Maple Valley". In 1949, President Harry S Truman announced that West Richland would be receiving help from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center during its construction project known as "Project Mercury". The center would build a new airport which would serve as a stopover for astronauts traveling between Earth and space expeditions such as Apollo 11 and 12; this announcement created much excitement among residents who lived near the proposed site of the new airport. Construction began on October 31st 1951 with groundbreaking taking place two days later on November 1st 1951 under intensive media coverage! The new Marshall Airport opened to traffic on January 17th 1953! It has since been re-incorporated into King County as a borough. The first settler in what is now Spokane were two brothers from Denmark who came over sea in1858 and founded the city of Seattle on Puget Sound. AfterSeattle's incorporation as a town in 1859 they soon left for Oregon where they started anew and founded Tacoma along Puget Sound that same year also becoming one of the original towns in what is now King County The only other permanent settlements west of Interstate 95 were at Moses Lake and Snoqualmie Pass where prospectors would build log cabins during the Gold Rush era (1858-1870). However these locations did not take hold because there was no water or power available nearby to support large towns while gold was found offshore or else transportation costs were prohibitively expensive. After years of struggle by various groups including farmers, miners and lumbermen local resident John Noyes organized his own government on December 12th 1861 which he called the Northwest Territory Government under United States auspices
