West Richland, Washington is a small town in the state of Washington located on the banks of the Columbia River. It is known for its agricultural and ranching industries, as well as its natural resources such as timber and coal. The town was founded in 1853 by settlers from British Columbia. West Richland has a population of around 1,500 people today. The town was founded on the edge of an old Indian village which had been abandoned due to water shortages caused by the high volume of traffic along the route between Seattle and Portland that passed through it. In 1853, two men named John Wightman and George Stephenson decided to start a new settlement on what would become West Richland. They named their new town after Sir Walter Scott’s novel Brave New World which they had read while staying at Fort Snelling in Minnesota during their journey westward. The county seat was moved from Prince Rupert to West Richland in 1893 following a referendum vote by residents. The name "West Richland" was chosen because of its location on the west bank of the Duwamish River between Tacoma and Everett. They chose West Richland because it had good soil, proximity to water resources, and friendly people. Today, there are over 1,000 residents living in West Richland including many farmers who have continued to make their living off their land for generations. Some notable local businesses include Myriad Health Inc., which operates two hospitals in Tacoma; Boeing Company’site 787 Dreamliner factory; Northwestel Communications Corporation (NWEC) serving both Tacoma and Bellevue; Cascade Timber & Lumber Company; American Weigh-out & Logistics Center based in Auburn; Microsoft's main campus located just outside of Tacoma; KIRO Radio Fox affiliate WBAY-TV NewsChannel 9;and several schools such as Mount Saint Helens Elementary School District No. 3A which has served students since 1924 and Central High School which opened in 1959). Some interesting points about West Richland history include: The first post office was established in 1859 by George Meek with a single package sent to him from Whatcom County along with instructions to “send all letters direct home [to his family] without stopping at any house near here” (Meek History Museum website). In 1907, when incorporated into town status by vote of voters, WestRichmond had a population of 3200 people (King county website).
