The CDP includes the town of West Richland and the villages of East Wenatchee and North Yakima. The first permanent settler in what is now West Richland was John Day in 1847. By 1851, land had been bought from Native Americans for $1 per acre. In 1861, Major General Ulysses S. Grant ordered the erection of a military post at present day East Wenatchee by Colonel George Wright as part of his general orders to Indian removal policy. Today's village of North Yakima developed around this site. In 1872, Leland Stanford erected a lumber mill on the east side of Tacoma Creek near present day Yakima Lake; this became one of the largest and most successful lumber businesses in America during the 19th century. In 1907, WACO Broadcasting Corporation began operations with studios located at 4200 Stevens Street in West Richland; it would become one of WABC-TV's many charter affiliates throughout Washington State before being sold to ABC Radio Incorporated in 1962. In 1972, Congress passed an act designating West Richland as an area for economic development; this led to various advancements such as better transportation links and easier access to education opportunities for residents over time. Today much technological progress has taken place within the boundaries of West Richland thanks to its location midway between Seattle and Spokane Valley; Google has its headquarters here and Microsoft has its Redmond campus nearby too!
