In 1847, when gold was discovered at Kalapana on the Snake River, many people flock to find it because it promised rich rewards. A mill was built soon after by John Nevin with help from Englishman Samuel Morse who had sent him mining reports back home. The discovery also led to an industry that would create jobs throughout much of what are now Yakima County: logging became a major economic force here beginning in earnest around 1850 with settlers seeking virgin forest for homespun cloth rather than exploitation by local tribes which controlled access to valuable timberlands. Goldmining continued until about 1870 but shifted from openhanded strikes into more systematic methods such as hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), making this one of America’s most consequential mineral discoveries ever made; today over half a million ounces (100 kg) has been mined from these hills since 1969! During World War II, defense industries turned Yakuza into some of the region’s largest employers; production peaked at $60 million between 1941 and 1945 but declined thereafter as war economy grew more complex and prices rose faster than profits could be raised without sacrificing quality or productivity; however, some companies did continue operating until well after Hiroshima/ Nagasaki atomic bombing in 1945; cattle ranchers have been important landowners/employers here since before then too Yakima has seen steady growth over recent decades with nearly 10% annual growth rate reported between 2010-2015 alone! This impressive milestone can largely be attributed to two factors: 1) historically low fertility rates among native residents resulting in an overall increase birthsrates within white households combined (+2%), while nonnative residents births decreased (-1%) 2) strong demand for skilled labor by various industries expanding traditional businesses served by homegrown talent

In 1853, the United States government purchased land in what is now Yakima County from the Spokane Tribe. The valley became a part of Washington after it was admitted to the Union as a state on November 16, 1889. The population of Yakima County grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching over 100,000 by 1900. However, rapid development and agricultural expansion led to significant environmental damage and social unrest in the years following World War II. In 1970, efforts began to develop the county into an economic powerhouse through heavy investment in transportation and housing developments. However, growth has not been linear or uninterrupted since then; there have been several major setbacks along the way including a series of natural disasters (the most recent being a devastating fire that destroyed much of downtown Yakima in 2018) and increasing crime rates.
